MANILA, Philippines—Geronima Pecson, the first Filipino and woman elected to the executive board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was also the country’s first woman senator. A former assistant executive secretary of then President Manuel A. Roxas, she joined the senatorial elections in 1947 and garnered the third-largest number of votes among the candidates.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
