Militants press for release of pol inmates

/ 07:08 AM July 23, 2011

More than 50 members of different militant groups had only water, candies and crackers for lunch and dinner yesterday to support the call to release political prisoners.

The militants’ light lunch and dinner was a show of support to 200 political prisoners across the country who went on a three-day fast starting yesterday to press President Benigno Aquino III to release them.

The different groups in Cebu, which included members from Bayan, Karapantan, Samahang Ex-Detainees sa Detensyon at Aresto (Selda), Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas and the KMU, gathered at the United Church of Christ in the Philippines Center for Education and Development in Cebu City yesterday as they started their protest with a liturgical ceremony officiated by Karapatan Chairman Fr. Ray Gellaogan.

Karapatan said the group had tallied at least 354 political prisoners in different detention centers in the country.  Correspondent Edison A. delos Angeles
