TODAY, September 27, is the 159th birth anniversary of Benito Legarda. Born in 1853 in Binondo, Manila, he was a member of the municipal council of Manila and lieutenant mayor of the Quiapo district. Legarda also served as vice president of the Malolos Congress and director of the Department of Finance. During the American period, he was appointed member of the Philippine Commission and resident commissioner to the United States. He died on Aug. 27, 1915, in Paris and was buried at Manila North Cemetery.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
