SHUTTLE SMASHERS from the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) put up a dazzling first-day showing in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. badminton competition at the Metrosports Center badminton courts in Lahug.
USJ-R’s bet in the men’s singles category A Charles Plaza finished off the first day with a 3-0 (win-loss) record after defeating Aljun Penute of the University of Cebu (UC), 19-21, 21-19, 21-11, Boes Cabrera of Cebu Doctors’ University (CDU), 21-11, 21-7, and Jason Villarba of the Cebu Institute of Technological-University (CIT-U), 21-16, 21-12.
In the men’s singles B, USJ-R’s Peter Paul Tan also won all of his matches. He defeated UC’s John Estorba (21-18, 24-22), Frans Collanes of CDU (21-15, 21-9) and Segfredo Veraces of CIT-U (21-12, 21-13).
The University of San Carlos’ (USC) Norbert Abutan-mo managed to keep in step with USJ-R in the men’s singles A as he won over Cabrera (21-14, 21-9), Villarba (21-16, 21-12) and John Gelfrey Abelo of the University of the Visayas (UV), 21-10, 21-19.
USC’s Janjan Vequezo defeated Veraces (21-12, 21-13), Estorba (17-21, 21-12, 21-18) and John Paul Go of UV (21-15, 21-8) to give USC a 3-0 mark in the men’s singles B.
In the women’s singles A, USJ-R so far has two wins followed by UC, which has a single win and a loss. USC is leading the women’s singles B with three wins followed by UC with a 2-1 standing and USJ-R with (1-2) standings. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
