Pa, son hauling logs killed in Agusan Norte hinterland—military

TAGUM CITY, Philippines–Suspected communist rebels shot and killed a father and son in a hinterland village in Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte before noon Thursday, police said Friday.

Alfredo Antong, 57, and his son Mario, 37, died of multiple gunshot wounds following the 11:45 a.m. attack by suspected rebels, Superintendent Martin Gamba, Caraga police regional spokesperson, said.

Gamba said the Antongs were hauling falcata logs in Purok 3 in Barangay when a group of armed men, believed to be NPA rebels, arrived and opened fire using M-16 and M-14 rifles.

They died instantly while the assailants fled on foot, he said.

“(Based on) investigation by Cabadbaran police, it was found out the victims were former members of the NPA,” Gamba said.
