THE DEFENDING champions University of San Jose-Recoletos passed its first acid test in its title-retention bid as it survived the University of San Carlos in three gruelling sets at the start of the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. girls volleyball tournament yesterday at the USC gym.
Fresh off a title win last year that abruptly snapped the dynasty of the University of Southern Philippines Foundation, USJ-R withstood the gallant stand of USC and won, 25-15, 19-25, 25-20.
Last year’s runners-up wasn’t as fortunate as USPF lost to the Southwestern University, 17-25, 25-15, 29-27.
The University of Cebu also proved to be rude hosts as it handed the debuting Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu a 25-9, 25-12 thrashing.
In women’s action, USC defeated Cebu Doctor’s University in straight sets, 25-11, 25-11, 26-24 while in the men’s side, the University of the Visayas took care of CDU, 25-12, 25-11, 25-10. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
