THE UNIVERSITY of Southern Philippines Foundation (USPF) and the University of San Jose Recoletos (USJ-R) won their opening matches as the secondary football competition of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) kicked off yesterday at the football field of the Cebu City Sports Center.
USPF edged Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC), 2-1, in the first match while USJ-R inflicted the same score against University of San Carlos (USC) in the second match.
The junior Panthers scored both their goals in the first half with Christian Milledo finding the back of the net in the 23rd minute. John Clifford Celito scored the second goal four minutes later.
Joshua Miguel Kwan prevented the Magis Eagles from getting shutout after scoring a goal in the 82nd minute.
In the second game, USJ-R drew first blood in the 16th minute via Marco Aldite’s goal.
USC scored the equalizer two minutes later courtesy of Eugene Angelo Abao.
The Jaguars’ win was sealed by Paolo Labajo, who made his contribution in the 56th minute.
Both USPF and USJ-R are sharing the top spot with three points apiece.
TERTIARY
In the resumption of the tertiary division contest today, University of Cebu will try to solidify its hold of the top spot as it faces defending champions USC, who is also hungry for a win after bowing to USJ-R last weekend.
Prior to the UC-USC match, USPF hopes to barge into the win column as it goes up against University of the Visayas. /CORRESPONDENT MARS G. ALISON
