Mayol gets new world title shot

/ 06:57 AM September 07, 2012

In what could very well be his final chance at reclaiming lost glory, former WBC light flyweight champion Rodel “Batang Mandaue” Mayol will challenge IBF superflyweight world champion Juan Carlos Sanchez of Mexico on September 23 in the champion’s home turf.

The 31 year-old Mayol (31W-5L-2D, 22 KOs) was involved in a controversy in Mexico early this year when he pulled out of his title fight against WBA flyweight champion Hernan Marquez claiming that the Mexican cheated at the scales during the weigh-in. But Mayol bounced back with a masterful ten-round unanimous decision win over former WBO flyweight champion Julio Cesar Miranda at the Ynares Center in Pasig City last May.

Sanchez (14W-1L-1D, 7 KOs) is ten years younger than Mayol and will be making his second title defense. All of his fights have been held in Mexico.

The Spanish language boxing website notifight.com stated in an article that Mayol could very well be Sanchez’ toughest opponent considering his experience in world title fights. Their fight is set on September 22 (September 23 Philippine Time).
