San Remigio archeological site to become an on-site museum
A museum is proposed in San Remegio town in northern Cebu to house important archeological find in the town’s San Juan Nepomuceno Church and Lapyahan public beach, three months ago.
The University of San Carlos (USC) Museum hosted an exhibit of the relics recovered at San Remegio, the oldest archaeological site in Cebu last Thursday.
According to Jojo Bersales, Chairman of the Socio-Anthro Department of USC, the oldest of the relics of an adult male was dated 1600 years old.
Bersales said they found burial sites which may come from three possible time periods: the Middle Iron (1200-1600 years ago), the Late Iron ( 800-1200 years ago), and the Age of Contact or Foreign Trading (1,100-500 years ago).
An on-site museum is proposed to be built next year in San Remegio in order to preserve the recovered relics.
A barangay hall located near the Lapyahan beach would be the ideal place for the museum. A hole would be dug wherein the people would be able to see the relics below the ground.
According to Bersales, the Province of Cebu has already donated P1 million for the museum. The National Museum and the USC Museum according to Bersales are also raising additional funds to finance the project.
The archeological find in San Remegio is very important as its could provide vast information on Cebu’s unwritten past, said Bersales.
