THE ARELLANO University Chiefs registered an upset as they shocked the second-running Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 85-82, in the 88th NCAA men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
The win was just the Chiefs fourth in their 10 games but it came off a highly touted Heavy Bombers squad.
JRU fell to 7-3 (win-loss), the same record as the San Sebastian Stags.
The guards of Arellano completely dominated the game as they combined for 54 points led by the 22 of Rocky Acidre and the 16 each of rookies John Pinto and James Forrester.
JRU’s top gun Nate Matute paced the team with 21 while John Villarias continued his scoring streak with 17 markers.
