Lapu-Lapu man jumps to his death

A 64-year-old man died after he allegedly jumped off a bridge after an overnight drinking session with a neighbor in barangay Babag 2, Lapu-Lapu City.

The body of Olimpio Reyes, a resident in the barangay, was found floating about 30 minutes after he leaped from Takan bridge yesterday.

The Takan bridge connects Lapu-Lapu City and Cordova town.

Reyes’ neighbor Hermelando Laurente, 42, told police that he and Reyes started drinking in a videoke bar past 8 p.m. last Tuesday and ended around 10 a.m.  yesterday.

During the drinking session, Reyes lamented that his family has taken him for granted, said Laurente.

Police said Reyes and his wife separated years ago. Reyes’ son is living abroad and sends money for his father’s room rental and food.

The son also sends money to Rosa Ponce, who is paid to accompany and assist Reyes.

Laurente said that when the drinking bout ended past 10 a.m., Reyes stood and left the table.

Laurente said he followed Reyes, who was  unsteady on his feet then was surprised to see  Reyes climb  the concrete railing of the bridge and jump.

Laurente said Reyes was carried away by the strong current.

The neighbor said he sought the help of  fishermen and  bystanders to rescue Reyes.

Half an hour later, Reyes’ body was found floating in the water.

It was only then that Laurente  called the police to report the incident.
