Marcela Agoncillo sewed in five days the Philippine flag, which was unfurled during the declaration of the country’s independence on June 12, 1898. Born on June 24, 1860, Agoncillo created the flag with the help of her daughter Lorenza and Delfina Herbosa Natividad, a niece of Jose Rizal. Married to revolutionary Felipe Agoncillo, Marcela died on May 30, 1946, at the age of 85.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
