BACOLOD CITY – About 25 communist rebels took five high-powdered firearms and ammunition during Saturday’s raid on the fish farm owned by the nephew of Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
The New People’s Army (NPA) rebels also took the personal belongings of watchmen and workers during the attack on the fish farm of Joseph Edgar Sarrosa in Barangay (village) Bulanon, Sagay, about 82.9 kilometers north of here.
The rebels barged into Sarrosa’s property about 10 p.m. on Saturday and warned the watchmen and the workers not to put up a fight because they were only after their firearms.
The NPA rebels disarmed the guards of their two M-14 assault rifles, an M-16 armalite rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and a homemade .22 caliber revolver.
They also took the wallets and cellular phones of fishpond workers as well as an Icom base radio, said Superintendent Harold Tuzon, Sagay police chief.
He said the raid only lasted for 15 minutes. The rebels fled the farm in separate directions.
On July 6, NPA rebels raided the Philex Mining Co. compound in Sipalay City, destroyed P3 million worth of properties and took the four firearms of Philex guards.
Last month, suspected rebels also raided two haciendas in EB Magalona town, and torched three farm tractors after the owners reportedly refused to pay revolutionary taxes.
