The University of the Visayas Green Lancers continued to remain focused on their goal of reclaiming lost glory as they claimed their second win in a row with a 72-51 clobbering of the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament last night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers were the standard-bearer of the league for nine years in a row before they were dethroned by the University of Cebu Webmasters in the last two seasons.
It appears that UV is poised to stand atop the league once again and the Wildcats were the latest victims as they fell prey to a 26-4 run bridging the first and second periods that all but decided the game’s outcome.
Meanwhile, the defending juniors champions UV Baby Lancers improved their record to 3-0 (win-loss) after they walloped the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers, 89-61.
MVP, Paul Desiderio led the way with 16 points.
The bitterness from UV and CIT-U’s encounter in the finals of this year’s Partner’s Cup was evident yesterday with both teams incurring several unsportsmanlike fouls.
CIT-U’s Floyd Taboada was ejected from the game with 17.8 seconds left in the third period for swinging his elbow in the face of UV’s pesky guard Eman Calo.
Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy said Taboada will be suspended for one game because of his ejection and will be fined P5,000.
Wowie Escosiohad 14 points while Jerome Silva chipped in 12 points for UV.
