Warriors log first win under new mentor
BEFORE THE SEASON began, newly installed head coach Julian Macoy set the most modest of ambitions which was to get just one win.
The University of San Carlos Warriors achieved that late last night as they toppled the two-time reigning champions, University of Cebu Webmasters, 86-79, in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Warriors played spirited basketball as they crawled their way back from a nine-point deficit in the third period and got the win behind the inspired efforts of Nico Magat, Michael Cantonao and Nilton Otida in the payoff period.
The win by USC made up for the loss of their younger counterparts, the Baby Warriors to the defending champions University of the Visayas Baby Lancers, 74-79, in the juniors division tournament.
In other games in the high school class, the UC Baby Webmasters edged the USPF Baby Panthers, 92-90 while the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars got their first win after beating the Don Bosco Greywolves, 65-40.
Charles Pepito paced USC with 15 points while Magat and Cantonao each had 14 markers. Otida got 10. UC was led by the 26 points of Brian Heruela. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
