VERGILIO “Maton” Silvano remained the no. 1 Philippine light flyweight contender as he clinched the Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) lightflyweight belt in an impressive fourth-round knockout victory over Charlie “Steelbar” Cabilla in last Sunday night’s main event of  the Fight Fury I at the J Centre Mall in Mandaue City.

Silvano downed Cabilla, the no. 7 lightflyweight contender, at the 2:55 mark of the fourth round via a strong left hook to the head.

Silvano dictated the bout early as he floored Cabilla in the first round with a hook.

Cabilla tried to recover but was instead deducted a point after an accidental headbutt that caused a small cut in the forehead of Silvano.  Cabilla was downed again in the third round after a strong body shot.

Silvano said he will rest a bit before he continues training for his target bout against Philippine lightlfyweight champ Jerson Mancio of the ALA Boxing Gym.

In the co-main event, Ryan Boncawil of Bukidnon was downed by Omega Boxing Gym’s Jason Canoy in the 2:59 mark of the ninth round.

Bongcawil was the more accurate and pressure fighter in the first five rounds but started to slow down at the start of the sixth round. This gave Canoy a chance to get back. He immediately focused his attack on Boncawil’s body. Bongcawil kissed the canvas after getting hit with a viscious hook.

Meanwhile, Canoy’s stable mate Jack “Golden Boy” Tepora escaped an  aggressive brawler Junior Salvador in their six-round showdown via a unanimous decision.

Sherwin Caday and Omega Stable’s Jordan Catubay finished off their bout in a draw. Jhaleel Payao won via third-round TKO against Rommel Banquirigo while Charlie Pucdol of Omega Gym downed Jerome Casas in the third round./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
