Welder killed in 40-foot fall

A welder died on Monday night after he accidentally slipped and fell through the hatch of a ship he was repairing in Manila. The body of Renato Osorio, 53, a resident of Tondo, was found before midnight by his coworker at the Aurora Marine Repair Services after he apparently fell from a height of 40 feet from the main deck of the cargo ship MV Solid Link which was docked at Pier 8, North Harbor in Tondo. Police Officer 3 Rodel Benitez of the Manila Police District (MPD) homicide section told the Inquirer that initially, Osorio’s coworker thought he was just resting because he had complained earlier that his eyes were tired and aching. But when Elizar Vicente opened at around 11 p.m. the hatch that Osorio had been working on, he discovered the victim’s body on the bottom deck, some 40 feet below the main deck. The MPD homicide section investigator described Osorio as lying on his stomach. Both of his legs were twisted and apparently broken while his face was swollen. “The welding equipment he was gripping must have slipped and he probably tried to catch it but he slipped and fell through the hatch,” the policeman said, adding that the victim’s fall could have jolted the cover of the hatch and caused it to close behind him. The body was brought to a funeral parlor in Sta. Cruz, Manila, for autopsy. Jeannette I. Andrade
