SAN SEBASTIAN stars Calvin Abueva and Ronald Pascual matched the entire output of Perpetual Help on their way to leading the Golden Stags to an 87-60 rout of the Altas in the 87th NCAA basketball tournament yesterday at the Arena in San Juan City.
Abueva scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half while Pascual shot the lights out and scored 29 to help put the Stags at the top of the standings with a 3-0 (win-loss) record.
The Altas, who played in their fourth game in 10 days, fell to a league-worst 0-4 mark.
Abueva also punctuated his all-around performance by almost notching a triple-double. He grabbed 15 rebounds and had seven assists.
The teams were neck-to-neck early on with the score surprisingly tied at 15-all after the first period.
Disaster, though, befell Stags’ wingman Jonathan Semira, who fell hard to the floor while jostling for a rebound at the 2:56 mark of the second period. He did not return to the game.
Nevertheless, the Stags broke the game wide open at the onset of the third canto which they opened with a 10-3 salvo./Correspondent Jonas Panerio
