FIVE KENYANS will highlight the 2011 Race to Reduce Challenge: A Race for the Next Generation Visayas leg slated Aug. 14 at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City.
Race director Raffy Uytiepo said the names of the five were still not given to him but he is sure that these runners are not just average runners.
The upcoming race will feature a full 42-kilometer marathon that will bring runners to the northern towns of Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela.
Government officials of the northern towns announced their strong support of the running event during yesterday’s press conference at the Cebu provincial Capitol.
The official launching was attended by Mayor Duke Frasco of Liloan and Mayor Teresa Delgado of Consolacion. They were joined by Mandaue City Sports Commission’s Hidelito Pascual, Compostela planning and development coordinator Carmelo Tejero, race director Raffy Uytiepo and Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.
The race, put up by the Aboitiz Equity Ventures, is one of the highlight activities of the One Cebu Expo for the 442nd founding anniversary of Cebu Province on Aug. 6.
The running event aims to campaign for the awareness of the importance of environment sustainability in the community. Because of this, organizers decided to use paper cups in their water stations and race bib and timing chips made from recycled materials to help highlight their cause.
The race will also have 3k, 5k, 10k and 21k categories, making it one of the biggest races in Cebu for the year. /CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
