2 more Pinays to vie in US Women’s golf
TWO more Filipina lady golfers will be playing in the prestigious US Women’s Amateurs as Cyna Rodriguez fired a 72 while Jayvie Agojo got a 74 to join Dottie Ardina in the tournament that has been set for Aug. 6-12 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Rodriguez went on a two-under card after 11 holes but faltered with two bogeys on Nos. 13 and 17 and settled for a 72 and joint second in the Sectional Qualifier at Glendora Golf Club in California Tuesday. In contrast, Agojo recovered from a poor start of a three-over round at the backside, hitting birdies on Nos. 1, 4 and 5 for an even card but fumbled with bogeys on Nos. 6 and 9 for that 74.
Still, she finished tied for seventh and earned a spot in next month’s tournament proper.
Lovelynn Guioguio, however, struggled all day on the tight layout, finishing with a six-over 78 and failing to make the cut.
Rodriguez, the former Philippine Ladies Open champion, and Agojo, the reigning Hong Kong Ladies Amateur winner, thus made it a three-player squad for ICTSI in Ohio after Ardina carded a 74 and booked a seat with a fourth place effort in the other qualifier at the Fountaingrove Golf Club in Sta. California last Monday. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio
