CEBU CITY — Air quality in Metro Cebu is improving as shifting wind patterns help disperse the haze that lingered over the area in recent days, the Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7) said Tuesday.

As of April 21, the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropped to 139, lowering the classification from “Very Unhealthy” to “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.”

The figure marks a steady improvement from an AQI( of 177 recorded on Monday and 199 on April 19.

EMB-7 attributed the development to stronger local winds that have broken up stagnant air and carried pollutants away from the metropolitan area.

Data from monitoring stations showed a corresponding decline in fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

PM2.5 refers to fine particles small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, posing significant health risks—especially to children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

Talisay City recorded decreasing concentrations, while Toledo City continued to maintain “Good” air quality levels.

Despite the easing conditions, authorities warned that health risks remain for certain groups.

Sensitive individuals—including children, senior citizens, and those with respiratory or cardiovascular conditions—are advised to limit outdoor exposure.

The general public may resume normal activities but should remain cautious and shift strenuous tasks indoors if symptoms such as coughing or difficulty breathing occur.

EMB-7 also recommended the continued use of N95 or KN95 masks for those at risk who must go outdoors.

The agency said it will keep monitoring weather patterns and PM2.5 levels to track further improvements and ensure timely public advisories. /gsg
