Baco mayor declares Mount Halcon forest fire out

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The forest fire that hit Mount Halcon has been officially declared “fire out” as of 3 p.m. on April 8, the local government of Baco in Oriental Mindoro announced on Wednesday.
In an official statement, Mayor Allan “AR” Roldan said the declaration was based on the latest assessment and verification by the Bureau of Fire Protection–Baco, in coordination with municipal and environmental authorities, including the Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO), the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Socorro, and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Authorities said the declaration followed thorough ground assessment and ocular inspection, along with the implementation of technical measures to prevent the fire from reigniting. These included the systematic establishment of fire lines or firebreaks to contain any remaining heat sources and prevent flames from spreading through dry vegetation.
The coordinated response also ensured clear division of tasks, effective communication, and efficient use of resources throughout the firefighting operations, according to the local government.
Despite the declaration, officials said monitoring efforts remain in place to quickly address any possible flare-ups. Fire lines will continue to be closely watched to ensure the blaze does not recur.
The Baco local government attributed the successful containment of the fire to the collective efforts of responding agencies, village officials of Barangay San Ignacio, and indigenous volunteers who assisted in the operation.
Residents are urged to remain vigilant and comply with existing regulations to prevent similar incidents, especially amid the dry season. /das
