Crime lull expected during Pacquiao-Bradley bout

MANILA, Philippines—Even criminals are expected to take the time off as Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao defends his WBO Welterweight title on Sunday (Manila time) against American challenger Timothy Bradley in Las Vegas, Nevada, a Philippine National Police spokesman said Friday.

Senior Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said authorities again expect a “lull” in crime incidents on Sunday, just like during Pacquiao’s previous fights.

“As in previous Pacquiao fights, everyone will be hooked to television screens to watch the 8-title world champion unleash his fury of punches against his opponent. It is anticipated that even criminal elements will take a break from their criminal ways to watch the fight,” Cerbo said.

But Cerbo gave assurances that police will remain vigilant against criminal elements that may take advantage of the event.

Free screening

Cerbo also said that PNP will hold a free live screening via live feed at the PNP Multi-Purpose Center for 1,500 people.

“This special viewing will give PNP personnel the chance to be one with our nation in cheering for our very own ‘Pambansang Kamao’ as he defends his crown and the nation’s glory once again with pride,” PNP chief, Director General Nicanor Bartolome said.

Bartolome’s fearless forecast is a successful title defense by the “People’s Champ.”
