Drunk militiaman kills detachment commander in Zamboanga City

MANILA, Philippines—A soldier was shot dead by a militiaman in a shooting incident in Zamboanga City Tuesday night, a military report said.

Capt. Alberto Caber of the Army’s 1st Infantry Division said a militiaman identified as Elpidio Reyes of the Charlie Company of the 18th Infantry Battalion based in Calabasa village in Zamboanga City shot his detachment commander, Staff Sergeant Benjamin Ferrer, using an M14 rifle.

Reyes, who was reportedly drunk, shot Ferrer after being scolded.

Ferrer suffered a gunshot wound in his stomach, and was pronounced dead on arrival when he arrived at Paragas Memorial Hospital in Quinipot village.

Immediate assistance was given to the family of the victim, and pursuit operations were now conducted against Reyes, Caber said.
