MANILA, Philippines — The National Police Commission (Napolcom) expressed support for the move to put into restrictive custody the 15 police officers allegedly involved in the abduction of cockfighting enthusiasts (sabungeros).
Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III confirmed on Monday that the 15 officers tagged in the case were being held in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
“This would ensure that they will be able to air out their side during the course of our proceedings by filing their counter affidavits or their answers,” Napolcom Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Calinisan said in a statement on Tuesday.
“This would also ensure their own safety,” he added.

Calinisan further expressed support for the PNP taking whistleblower Julie Patidongan – also known by the alias Totoy – into protective custody, which Torre also previously confirmed.
“His safety is of paramount importance as he has a story to tell to the nation,” the Napolcom vice chairperson stressed.
“Napolcom, the PNP and the DOJ (Department of Justice) still have a lot to do on multiple fronts,” he added.

In an interview over GMA News last June, Patidongan claimed police officers were involved in the kidnapping and killing of sabungeros between April 2021 and January 2022.
In response, Napolcom launched its own investigation into the abductions, vowing administrative sanctions – including dismissal from the service – for police officers who may be proven to be involved. /das
