The Naga City government will build around 100 houses for its poor constituents.
The houses will be built on a two-hectare lot offered by Cemex cement factory in barangay Tina-an, Naga City.
Cemex and Gawad Kalinga (GK), its partner in building the houses, showed their plans to Mayor Valdemar Chiong, who gave a nod.
Chiong said the offer is for the benefit of his constituents and the only thing the city can offer is to develop the drainage and road right of way.
Last May 29, Chiong signed an agreement with Cemex legal counsel Ma. Virginia Eala and GK representative Jerome Awit.
Eala said they have been planning the project for months until they remembered of the GK, which has a good intention for the poor.
“It is just like a dream to build communities for the less fortunate,” Eala said.
Awit, on his part, said the mission of the GK is not just to build houses but to build communities and to teach them on the good values for the country to develop.
“Giving back their dignity (houses) is too easy to teach the good values,” Awit said.
He said beneficiaries will not pay for the houses, but only build them.
Chiong said they were planning to put in the area the 36 Cemex employees affected by the company’s mining, including the Nagahanons who are living in the tragedy prone areas. /CORRESPONDENT GABRIEL C. BONJOC
