MANILA, Philippines – Catholic clergymen who received sports utility vehicles from the previous administration could face criminal prosecution if investigators find probable cause to charge them in court, a Palace spokeswoman said Saturday.
In a news briefing aired on radio, deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said no person was immune to charges arising from a criminal offense.
Asked if bishops who received the luxury vehicles or money to buy them from the Philippine Carity Sweepstakes Office could be penalized, Valte said, “It depends on the nature of the offense.”
“Certainly, if it’s a criminal offense… nobody is above the law and nobody is immune from suit if criminal offenses are concerned,” Valte said.
