Bomb explodes near mayor’s house in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—A bomb exploded in front of the house of Mayor Cherrylyn Akbar in Isabela City in Basilan on Thursday noon but nobody was reported injured, Church and police officials said.

“I was informed that the bomb exploded in front of the house of Mayor Akbar, but the bomb hit a vehicle owned by Vice Mayor (Abdulbaki) Panther Ajibon,” Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad told the Inquirer.

Ajibon’s house is just across the street from Akbar’s.

Superintendent Allan Nazarro Sr., Isabela City police chief, said the improvised explosive device was planted on a motorbike.

“We still do not know the owner of the motorbike,” he said.

Nazarro said no one was hurt in the 12:20 p.m. blast.
