MANILA, Philippines — The northeast monsoon (amihan) and the easterlies are projected to bring rains over parts of the Philippines on Saturday, February 1, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Amihan is the cold seasonal winds from the northeast, while easterlies are the warm winds from the Pacific Ocean.
In the state weather bureau’s Saturday morning forecast, weather specialist Grace Castañeda said, “Maulap na kalangitan na may mga kasamang pag-ulan yung mararanasan dito sa bahagi ng Cagayan Valley at Aurora. Dulot ‘yan ng amihan.”
(Cloudy skies with rains are expected in the parts of Cagayan Valley and Aurora. That is due to the northeast monsoon.)

Castañeda also said the northeast monsoon is likely to bring light rain showers over Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region and the rest of Central Luzon.
“Magiging maulap din yung kalangitan na may mga kasamang kalat-kalat na pag-ulan, pagkidlat at pagkulog dito naman sa bahagi ng Bicol Region maging sa area din ng Quezon. Dulot ‘yan ng easterlies,” the weather specialist said.
(Skies will also be cloudy and have scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of the Bicol Region as well as Quezon. That is due to the easterlies.)
“Dito naman sa area ng Mimaropa, maging sa nalalabing bahagi ng Calabarzon, ay mayroon tayong mararanasan lamang na mga isolated na pag-ulan, pagkidlat at pagkulog na dulot naman ng easterlies,” she added.
(Here in the area of Mimaropa as well as the rest of Calabarzon will experience isolated rain showers and thunderstorms due to the easterlies.)
Visayas and Mindanao are expected to see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a possibility of sudden thunderstorms also due to the easterlies, Castañeda said.
“Itong mga pag-ulan na ito ay posibleng maging short-duration na mga moderate to heavy na pag-ulan na maaari pa rin magdulot ng mga pagbaha at pagguho ng lupa,” she explained.
(These rains will possibly be short-duration and moderate to heavy showers that may still cause flooding and landslides.)
The weather service has not monitoring any new low pressure areas within or around the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).

Pagasa is projecting that either no tropical cyclones or one tropical cyclone will form and enter the PAR this February.
It did not raise a gale warning, but Castañeda said the waters off Northern Luzon and the eastern portions of Central and Southern Luzon will be moderate to rough this Saturday.
