Index crimes, cyber crimes decline in 2024 – DILG
MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla reported Thursday that index crime and cybercrime rates declined in 2024.
Remulla backed up this claim with data in his message read by National Police Commission Vice Chairperson Ricardo Bernabe to mark the 34th anniversary of of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“Through diligent law enforcement, heightened police visibility, and collaborative efforts with various sectors, we have seen a decrease in index crime volume from 38,404 in 2023 to 34,841 in 2024,” Remulla said in his message.
This data means that there was a 9.28-percent decrease in index crimes from 2023 to 2024.
“Likewise, through constant monitoring, detection, protection and mitigation of cybersecurity issues, cybercrimes also dropped by 31.8 percent, with 14,529 reports in 2024, as compared to 21,300 in 2023,” added Remulla.
Article continues after this advertisementThe PNP also previously reported a downward trend last October, announcing a 61.87-percent decrease in index crimes from 2022 to 2024.
Article continues after this advertisementRepublic Act No. 6975 or the DILG Act of 1990 reorganized the Philippine Constabulary and the Integrated National Police into the PNP, an attached agency of the Interior Department.
The merger became effective on Jan. 29, 1991.
“It is reassuring to see that the PNP is making significant progress in creating a safer, crime-free environment for our country,” Remulla said.
“We have also been relentless in our internal cleansing efforts, resolving cases involving rogue cops to maintain our organization’s integrity and the people’s trust,” he added.
Remulla stressed that the PNP still faces “heavier tasks” with the national and local elections this coming May and the Philippines’ hosting of the 2026 Association of Southeast Asian Nations Summit.
