MANILA, Philippines — A fire hit homes in San Andres, Manila on Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, with residents said to have beaten up a man for allegedly causing the blaze.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire broke out at around 6:53 a.m. near Arellano Street and Florentino Torres Street (formerly Dagonoy Street) when first responders rushed to the scene.

The Manila Fire District raised the first alarm at 6:58 a.m., the second alarm at 7:01 a.m., and the third alarm at 7:13 a.m.

Authorities said the blaze was under control at 8:20 a.m. then declared the fire out by 9:07 a.m., about two hours and 14 minutes after it broke out.

BFP said 14 firetrucks and one ambulance responded, but the bureau did not detail whether it logged any casualties or injuries.

Medical personnel of the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), however, reported that a 57-year-old man was beaten up by residents for suspicions that he caused the fire.

The city DRRMO said he suffered abrasions in the back of his ear, swelling on his forehead, and scalds on one of his sides and both of his shoulders.

“Agad na nilinis at nalagyan ng gamot ang kanyang natamong sugat at agad na turn over sa kapulisan para sa imbestigasyon,” the Manila DRRMO said in a Facebook post.

(His wounds were immediately cleaned and treated with medicine, and he immediately turned over to the police for investigation.)
