Rains expected across PH on Friday due to shear line, ITCZ
MANILA, Philippines — Most parts of the country will experience rains on Friday due to the shear line and intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
In Pagasa’s 5 p.m. update on Thursday, weather forecaster Chenel Dominguez said clouds are covering the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) and noted that no low pressure area was being monitored inside or outside it.
“Magkakaroon po tayo ng surge ng northeast monsoon, at malaking bahagi ng Luzon ang makakaranas nito. Asahan pong makakaranas ng malamig na madaling araw, pero pagdating ng tanghali hanggang hapon ay asahan ang mainit at maalinsangan na panahon,” Dominguez said.
(We will experience a surge of the northeast monsoon, affecting a large part of Luzon. Expect cold early mornings, but by noon until afternoon, the weather will be warm and humid.)
She added that the eastern section of northern Luzon, particularly Cagayan and Isabela, will experience overcast weather and light rains.
Furthermore, cloudy skies and scattered rains due to the shear line are expected over Luzon’s eastern section, particularly in the Bicol Region and Quezon. A shear line occurs when the northeast monsoon or “amihan” converges with easterlies or the warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean, according to Pagasa.

(A large part of Mindanao and Eastern Visayas will experience rain due to the ITCZ. However, the rest of the regions, particularly Palawan, the remaining parts of Visayas, and Mindanao, can expect generally fair weather.)
Meanwhile, a gale warning due to the surge of northeast monsoon was raised over the coastal areas of the following provinces:
- Batanes
- Ilocos Norte
- Ilocos Sur
- Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
- Isabela
Waves of 2.8 to 5.0 meters are likely to occur in these areas.
“Pinapaalahanan po natin ang mga kababayan natin na delikado pong pumalaot sa coastal waters,” Dominguez warned.
(We remind our fellow citizens that venturing into these coastal waters is dangerous.)
