TACLOBAN CITY — An alleged leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) was arrested in an operation Monday by government troops in Barangay Malidong, Gamay town, Northern Samar.

The suspect, identified as “Ahon,” allegedly served as the vice squad leader of the Regional Guerrilla Unit (RGU) under the Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee (EVRPC).

Members of the 52nd Infantry Battalion (IB) conducted the operation after reports from a concerned citizen regarding sightings of rebels, allegedly engaging in extortion activities in the area.

Authorities seized a firearm in his possession during the operation.

On Nov. 19, the 20th IB clashed with 10 rebels in Barangay C.M. Recto, Catubig, also in Northern Samar.

The encounter resulted in the confiscation of three high-powered firearms, assorted ammunition, medical supplies, and personal belongings.

Lieutenant Colonel Richard Villaflor, commanding officer of the 20th IB, praised the troops for their swift and decisive action, which forced the rebels to retreat.

Major General Adonis Ariel Orio, commander of the 8th Infantry Division based in Catbalogan City, Samar, called on remaining NPA members to take advantage of the government’s amnesty program, providing an opportunity to reintegrate into society and pursue peaceful, productive lives.
