Manila crime rate rises, worst in Southeast Asia – Numbeo Crime Index

MANILA, Philippines — The latest report from the Numbeo Crime Index has ranked Manila as the most dangerous city in Southeast Asia, reflecting a significant increase in crime rate and a growing sense of fear among residents.

The city received a crime index score of 64.23, with a high rating of 72.51 in overall crime, 71.26 in property crimes, and 71.12 in violent crimes.

These statistics highlight widespread concerns over theft, burglary, assault, and armed robbery.

Public perception of safety in Manila has also sharply declined, especially at night, with the safety index dropping to a concerning 29.96.

In contrast, under the administration of former Mayor Isko Moreno from 2019 to 2022, Manila saw a significant decline in crime.

At the  time, the Numbeo Crime Index for Manila was reported at 59.4%.

Philippine National Police (PNP) data showed a 45% drop in crime volume, from 20,517 incidents in 2019 to 11,231 in 2020.

Moreno implemented various crime prevention strategies, including boosting police presence and installing 1,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the city, allowing for improved real-time monitoring and response to criminal activities.

The stark contrast in rankings and crime data underscores the challenges currently facing then administration of Mayor Honey Lacuna.

As the city grapples with increased crime and declining public confidence in safety, the findings from the Numbeo report highlight a critical need for more effective crime prevention strategies and robust law enforcement measures.
