MANILA, Philippines — Akbayan party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña appealed to fellow lawmakers to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, stressing the solons should “not mind their votes but mind the good of the country” ahead of the 2025 midterm elections.

“Halos dalawang buwan nang natutulog ang impeachment complaints,” Cendaña told reporters on Friday as supporters gathered at the People Power Monument.

“Alam natin malapit na ang eleksyon. Pero sa dulo, huwag nating isipin yung bilang ng boto. Ang isipin natin ay ang kapakanan ng ating sambayanan,” the Akbayan representative added.

(We know it’s election season. But in the end, let us not think about the votes. Let us think about the good of the country.)

Cendaña endorsed the first impeachment complaint against Duterte, filed last Dec. 2 by civil society organizations. Two more cases against the vice president were filed later that month.

The vice president faces allegations of misuse of public funds by her office and the Department of Education (DepEd) when she was still education secretary.

“Hindi naman tayo nagkukulang doon sa paghihingi ng updates, sa pangungulit natin, sa pag-follow up sa Office of the SecGen (Secretary-General) para aksyunan ng House leadership (referring to the complaints). Pero hanggang sa ngayon, iba-ibang sagot nakukuha natin.”

(We kept asking for updates, following up with the Office of the Secretary-General so that the House leadership would act on the complaints. But until now, we’re getting different answers.)

Various political parties and sectoral groups gathered at the People Power Monument on Friday morning, urging the House to act on the complaints against the vice president.

More rallies calling for the impeachment of Duterte are scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila and the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) Shrine.

The complainants behind all three cases made a joint appearance last Jan. 16, stressing to Congress that impeaching the vice president was a “moral obligation.”
