DICT rolls out free public Wi-Fi in Misamis Oriental

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) launched a free Wi-Fi access in the entire province of Misamis Oriental.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy, who graced the launching in Gingoog City, said the initiative, which covers 23 towns and two cities, is the first in Mindanao.

Misamis Oriental Governor Peter Unabia said that with the infrastructure, people will have easier access to weather information, among others, which increases the level of resilience of the communities.

This development compliments the effort of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) to install weather tracking system in all municipalities and cities of the province since there have already good access to the internet.

Engr. Hope Shalom Labada, DICT-10 Free Wifi focal person, said that provincewide, there are a total of 205 access points in 109 locations.

These include 20 municipal and city halls, 31 barangay halls, six other government agencies, four public plazas, 12 rural health units, six state universities and colleges, 29 public schools and a tourist destination in the town of Claveria where there is a big influx of tourists.
