Universities in CamSur, Albay open doors to evacuees amid Storm Kristine

GUINOBATAN, Albay — Universities and colleges in Camarines Sur and Albay turned their campuses into temporary shelters for those affected by Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) on Tuesday, Oct. 22.

The University of Nueva Caceres (UNC), Naga College Foundation, Inc., Ateneo de Naga University, and University of Sta. Isabel in Naga City, Camarines Sur as well as Bicol University (BU) in Legazpi City and Daraga, Albay opened their doors to students and other residents displaced by severe flooding.

UNC President Fay Lea Patria Lauraya appealed for volunteers and alumni support, noting the unprecedented scale of the flooding.

“The floodwaters were of a magnitude we have never experienced before,” Lauraya said.

“If it is in your best interest to evacuate, you are welcome to seek temporary shelter at the UNC campus,” she added.

In Legazpi City, Bicol University initially restricted its assistance to its students but later extended shelter to the public following criticism for being selective.

On Wednesday, BU’s student body, along with sponsors, provided hot meals to evacuees.
