Nueva Vizcaya hanging bridge falls, 31 students injured

MANILA, Philippines — Thirty-one students in Alfonso Castaneda, Nueva Vizcaya were injured after the hanging bridge they were crossing collapsed, according to police.

The incident was recorded at around 8:40 a.m. on Thursday, at the boundary of Sitio Melina and Sitio Diogan in Barangay Abuyo.

According to the Nueva Vizcaya police, students and faculty members of Abuyo National High School –  91 students, eight umpires, four coaches, and four officiating officials, were on their way to a school-based intramurals at the open court of Sitio Diogan.

Based on the investigation, Robelle de Leon, a teacher, instructed the students to cross the bridge by batch.

“Only five at a time should cross,” de Leon said in Filipino as quoted in the police report.

Despite the order, the students reportedly did not cross the bridge by batch, causing the bridge to collapse.

The injured students were taken t0 the hospital for further medical tests and intervention, according to police.
