2-hour travel delays

/ 07:36 AM May 23, 2012

Give yourself leeway of at least two hours travel time to reach your destination if you’re crossing the Marcelo Fernan Bridge in June, especially if you’re  heading for the Mactan Cebu International Airport to catch a flight.

With the bridge repair starting on June 4, the public has to be prepared for some delays on the road, said assistant district engineer Renault Ricardo of the  Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district 6.

He said commuters and motorists should expect traffic congestion since the start of the P25 million bridge repair coincides with the opening of classes.

With this, DPWH asked for “understanding and consideration” from the riding public.

Sixteen of the 18 rubber expansion joints of the bridge will be replaced to protect the structural integrity of the second bridge that connects Mactan Island with Cebu mainland, Ricardo said.

Repairs will last for 88 days or until mid- September.

During the repair, one lane of the four-lane bridge will be closed at a time. Two lanes will be opened for Mactan-bound traffic and one lane for Mandaue-bound traffic.

A time table and traffic plan was approved by DPWH-7 and the Mactan Cebu Bridge Management Board.
