Mancio stops Cabilla in 5th

PHILIPPINE light flyweight champion Jerson Mancio of the ALA Gym stopped Charlie Cabilla of Bukidnon in the fifth round Sunday night in their main event tussle at the Mandaue City Plaza Square.

After feeling out his opponent in the opening round, Mancio knocked Cabilla down with a right straight in the second. Cabilla managed to get up but in the fifth round, a hard right hook to the abdomen sent Cabilla down for the ten count. Referee Tony Pesons signaled the end at the 1:58 mark.

It was Mancio’s first title defense as the Agusan del Sur boxer improved to 15W-3L-3D with 6 KOs while Cabilla dropped to 12W-10L-4D, 2 KOs.

In the undercards, Welbeth Loberanis beat Jason Canoy by majority decision. One judge scored a 95-95 drsw while the other two had Loberanis the winner, 96-94 and 96-95.

Jimmy Paypa beat Albert Villacampa by unanimous decision in their eight round brawl while Zaldy Aroa won by TKO against Gilbert Garciano in the second round. Referee Ben Necesario waived off the fight at the 1:42 mark when Garciano turned his back after receiving a series of punches to the head.

Pedro Balaba beat Julie Agrabio by first round TKO. Referee Tony Pesons stopped the fight after Agrabio was trapped in the neutral corner and received several unanswered punches while in the night’s opening bout, Sherwin Paro knocked out Ricky Nunez in the first round courtesy of a crushing right to the temple. Referee Ben Necesario counted Nunez out at 2:07.
