MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Education (DepEd) said on Tuesday that all 47,818 public and private schools under its jurisdiction were now open, including those that had to delay the start of classes due to the effects of Supertyphoon Carina (international name: Gaemi).

It also reported an increase in the number of enrollees for School Year 2024 to 2025. Of the 24.17 million students nationwide, more than 21.1 million were in public schools while over 2.7 million were in private schools.

In state and local universities offering K-12 education, the DepEd recorded 40,914 students and 290,461 others in alternative learning schools.

The department, however, said that it has yet to reach its goal of 27.7 million enrollees for this school year. It added that enrollment would remain open until Sept. 16.

Top 3 regions

The Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon provinces) region continued to account for the highest number of enrollees, with 2.9 million in public schools alone, followed by Central Luzon with 2.2 million enrollees and Metro Manila with 2 million.

These three regions were also affected by the supertyphoon nearly two weeks ago, prompting officials in 1,063 schools to postpone the start of classes.

As of Tuesday, the DepEd said that no more schools were being used as evacuation centers by victims of Carina.
