Pampanga capital suspends in-person classes due to flood

MABALACAT CITY — The City of San Fernando government suspended all in-person classes on Friday in public and private schools after heavy rain on Thursday that caused flooding in the capital city of Pampanga.

The city proper and its adjacent areas remained inundated with up to a foot of rainwater as of Friday morning.

“The City of San Fernando experienced intense to torrential rain showers, causing flooding on major roads and low-lying areas, including in the vicinity of some schools,” the city government said on its Facebook page.

“As a proactive measure and to provide safety among the students and personnel, the City Mayor ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes at all levels, public and private, in the City on August 2, 2024, Friday,” it added.

It said Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag had ordered the city disaster and risk reduction and management council to assess the situatio of schools in the city.

Caluag urged schools to conduct online classes and similar methods “so as not to hamper the students’ education.”

The heavy rain on Thursday led to flooding in portions of wide Jose Abad Santos Avenue, formerly known as Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo Road. INQ
