Cainta, Rizal under state of calamity

MANILA, Philippines — Cainta, Rizal has been placed under a state of calamity following massive flooding due to monsoon rains and Typhoon Carina, Mayor Elenita Nieto announced on Wednesday night.

In a post on her personal Facebook page, Nieto said she made the decision as the southwest monsoon has caused severe flooding and major damage to several barangays in Cainta.

“The Municipality of Cainta is now declared to be under a State of Calamity.  The southwest monsoon and Typhoon Carina’s continuous onslaught of rain since yesterday has brought severe flooding, causing huge damage to property and disruption of livelihood of our residents in all seven barangays,” Nieto said.

“We will continue to provide relief and to conduct rescue operations, with the goal of restoring our town,” she added.

Cainta was among the areas in Rizal hit severely by floods due to the southwest monsoon, as intensified by Typhoon Carina.  On social media, netizens posted different clips of inundated houses enduring floods.

Metro Manila was also placed in a state of calamity.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Typhoon Carina has weakened further and is approaching the northern boundary of the Philippine area of responsibility.
