MANILA, Philippines — More positions will be made available for teachers to speed up their promotion as promised by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in his third State of the Nation Address (Sona), Education Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara said on Tuesday.

At the sidelines of a “Brigada Eskwela” event at the Neptali A. Gonzales High School in Mandaluyong City, Angara said that in line with the President’s directive, the Department of Education (DepEd) would propose the creation of additional teacher positions beyond the ranks of Teachers 1 to 3.

Based on an earlier Inquirer report, under the Salary Standardization Law, teachers classified from Teacher 1 to 3 positions fall under Salary Grades 11, 12 and 13 with wages of P27,000, P29,165 and P31,320, respectively.

Angara said there was a slow turnover of positions among public school teachers due to a “block” in the Teacher 3 rank.

“So above the Teacher 3 position, we will create other teaching positions to pave the way for those down the ranks,” he said, adding that the new ranks would be “plantilla” positions.

Plantilla are permanent position items in the government with a corresponding authorized budget allotment in the annual General Appropriations Act.
