NDRRMC: Over 200,000 people affected by southwest monsoon woes

MANILA, Philippines — Bad weather brought by the southwest monsoon has now affected more than 200,000 people nationwide, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported Tuesday.
In a July 16 situational report released at 8 a.m., the agency said 93,743 families, consisting of 221,435 individuals, in 363 barangays have recently experienced heavy rain, floods, and other effects of the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat.
Of the total, 21,464 people were displaced; 20,026 took shelter in 46 evacuation centers (ECs) nationwide, while 1,378 stayed outside ECs.

The NDRRMC said floods hit the Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in the past few days.
The NDRRMC likewise said it received reports that two people died and two people were injured, while another one went missing due to the southwest monsoon’s effects. It noted, however, that it has validated only one of the two reported fatalities so far.
Moreover, the NDRRMC said the southwest monsoon ruined P17,879,687 in crops and affected 238 farmers and fisherfolk as of July 16.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) previously said the southwest monsoon brought moderate to heavy or heavy to intense rainfall over the western sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao from July 11 to 14.
Earlier Tuesday, the state weather agency said the southwest monsoon and a low-pressure area off Davao City are expected to bring overcast skies and rains to various parts of the country.
