The Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday warned the public about the danger of contracting leptospirosis from wading unprotected through flood waters.

The DOH said in a statement that, as of June 15, the total number of leptospirosis cases nationwide stood at 878.

A total of 84 deaths have also been recorded due to the diseases as of the same date.

“While this is only around half of the number of leptospirosis cases (1,769) in the same period last year, the DOH has observed that the weekly case count has started rising with the rains,” it said.

Of the six cases recorded from May 5 to 18, 60 were recorded from May 19 to June 1, followed by 83 cases observed from June 2 to June 15. —JEROME ANING
