PNP readies more checkpoints for polls

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police said it would put up more checkpoints and increase its patrols as it begins its security preparations for the 2025 local and national elections.

PNP chief Police Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said they have already outlined plans to target illegal firearms, drugs and private armed groups (PAGs) that could disrupt the upcoming midterm elections.

The PNP will work closely with local government units and other law enforcement agencies, with a focus on conducting frequent operations in “hot spots” of illegal activities, he said.

Part of the effort to go after PAGs will include increasing intelligence operations enforcing stricter measures by the PNP-Civil Security Group and the Firearms and Explosives Office to account for legitimate and loose firearms in high-risk areas.

At the same time, the PNP chief urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to the elections. —Frances Mangosing
