CEBU CITY – The Department of Health in Central Visayas (DOH-7) has cautioned the public to clean their surroundings to get rid of dengue which has become prevalent in the region.

While the case fatality rate of dengue cases is below 1% in Central Visayas, Dr. Eugenia Mercedes Cañal of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit at DOH-7 said the disease is present throughout the year.

She said it is crucial for individuals to actively engage in preventive measures to combat the spread of dengue and protect public health.

“Dengue is with us all year round. The good thing is that our case fatality rate is below 1%, at around 0.3% for the region, which is very good because our management and referral systems for dengue cases in the periphery have improved,” Cañal said.

From Jan. 1 to June 15, 2024, the DOH-7 has recorded at least 7,132 dengue cases in Central Visayas with 19 deaths.

Cañal said nearly 20 areas in the region have been significantly affected by dengue.

Inabanga town in Bohol logged the most number of dengue cases in the region with 424; followed by Tagbilaran City in Bohol, 230; Danao City in Cebu, 156; Toledo City in Cebu, 144; and Buenavista, Bohol, 134.

Cañal said all health centers in the region are prepared for the rainy season.

She advised parents to discourage their children from playing outside their houses to avoid accidents and infections./###
