MANILA, Philippines — Independence Day serves as a reminder for Filipinos to remain united for the country, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte said on Wednesday to mark the 126th anniversary of Philippine independence.

Duterte made this pronouncement in her Independence Day message.

“This day is a remembrance and recognition of our heroes, for all the sacrifices they made for our freedom and independence,” she said in Filipino.

“This is also a reminder for us to continue helping each other and to unite for a stable, peaceful, and prosperous Philippines,’ she added.

In her speech during the Independence Day celebration in Davao City, the vice president also said that the event commemorates the country’s liberation and acknowledges the adversities that Filipinos have overcome and the ideals they have strived for.

“The freedom we experience in the present is the result of the unyielding resolve of our ancestors to reclaim our right to govern ourselves as a sovereign nation,” she said.
