Re-open roads near mall, City Hall urged
Cebu City traffic officials want to re-open the roads in Gaisano Capital South on or before May 31, 2012 in preparation for next month’s school opening.
In a resolution passed during its regular session, the executive committee of the Cebu City Integrated Traffic Operations Management (Citom) board requested the City Council to impose the removal of the perimeter fence installed in Leon Kilat and Colon Streets.
Last December 23, a fire broke out in the shopping mall that was used as a corporate office of Gaisano Capital.
Earlier this year the mall paid a large amount for the road closure permit to Citom in preparation for the building’s demolition.
They asked Citom to close the road near the Gaisano Capital South building for seven months.
The reopening of the closed lane in these streets will accommodate the normal flow of traffic during the opening of classes.
Citom chairman Sylvan “Jack” Jakosalem said this would accommodate the traffic of the schools nearby like University of the Visayas (UV), University of Cebu (UC) and University of San Jose-Recoletos-Main Campus.
Vendors reported to Citom that the first floor of the shopping mall collapsed at 3 p.m.
But the demolition team of the shopping mall later clarified that a hose was cut which caused some debris to fall from the first floor. No one was hurt. Correspondent Tweeny M. Malinao
